After updating the VMware server on
one of our servers to version 1.0.4, our Sametime server doesn't boot any
more. It is installed in a VM running Kubuntu 7.04 (not supported, I know).
When booting the guest, it doesn't find its first and only SCSI drive sda
and tries sdb, sdb, ..., sdaa, ... sdkn...
I couldn't find anything in the internet
on this issue besides this forum entry: SCSI

The error is confirmed in the comments
for different host-OS/guest-OS combinations.
In one comment, the author recommends
to add following line to the VM configuation in the VMX file:
scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"
I followed his advice and got this dialog

Being cautious, I selected "No"
and ... the guest VM booted sucessfully nonetheless!
Second start: After an additional backup
I got bolder and answered "Yes". Result: The guest started
without problems again.
This leaves the question, if I'll get
other issues by changing the SCSI adapter to LSI Logic, I can't see by
now. But I think, I won't change the VM's configuration until the next
VMware server update.
